Hiking 101: Prep Like a Pro! How to get ready for your next hike.
A Sharing Session with APGI (Indonesia Mountain Guide Association)
Jakarta, April 24, 2025 – We hosted a special sharing session: Hiking 101: Prep Like a Pro! together with professional mountain guides from APGI (Indonesia Mountain Guide Association) — Rahman Mukhlis and Abe — who shared essential tips for beginner hikers on how to prepare for a successful, safe, and fun adventure.
The session featured two distinguished speakers who shared their experiences as a professional mountain guide:

The session opened with a powerful reminder: hiking is more than just walking — it’s a mindset. Preparation is the key to safety, comfort, and enjoyment. From understanding the trail’s terrain and difficulty, checking weather forecasts, to respecting Leave No Trace ethics, setting the right expectations ensures a much more rewarding adventure.
Gear and packing also play a critical role. Choosing proper hiking shoes, wearing layered clothing, and packing smart — bringing only essentials like water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and weather protection — can make a huge difference. Less weight means more energy and comfort during the hike, while a balanced backpack keeps you moving safely.
Physical preparation and teamwork were also emphasized. Strengthening your legs, core, and cardio with light exercises, and breaking in your shoes before hiking is crucial. Never hike alone as a beginner; always inform someone about your plans and hike with a buddy for safety and support. After your hike, remember to stretch, rehydrate, and reflect for an even better next adventure!
